Body Contouring

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Overview

Abdominoplasty, also known as tummy tuck, is performed by Dr. Philip Richardson, an experienced Brisbane plastic surgeon. Abdominoplasty can correct abdominal abnormalities caused by pregnancy, obesity, or weight loss; tighten abdominal muscles; repair abnormal hernia; and remove fat that may cause skin infection, back pain, difficulty walking, or difficulty with hygiene.

The Surgery

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is a body contouring procedure. During surgery, Brisbane plastic and cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Richardson creates an incision to remove excess lower abdominal skin and fat. Stitches are then used to tighten the underlying abdominal muscles. The remaining skin is stretched over the muscles and stitched in place. The naval (belly button) is often removed and repositioned during this procedure as well, so that it remains in a normal location.

Risks

Although risks of abdominoplasty are rare, they include infection, blood clots, bruising, swelling, uneven contours, and scarring. Women who may become pregnant may want to wait before having surgery since pregnancy will cause the abdominal muscles to stretch and reduce the effects of surgery.

After Surgery

Following tummy tuck surgery, patients will usually need to stay in the hospital overnight. Two drains, used to eliminate excess fluid from the surgical wounds, will be removed the day following surgery. Dressings covering the abdomen must be worn for at least a week, and a support garment should be worn for six weeks after abdominoplasty.
