Otoplasty

Prominent Ear Surgery

Overview

Otoplasty (ear surgery) is one of several procedures performed by Brisbane plastic surgeon, Dr. Philip Richardson. Protruding ears are often a source of teasing for children, and may cause adults to feel self-conscious. Prominent ear surgery is performed to reduce the amount that ears stick out and in some cases can also improve the shape of ears in both adults and children. Ear surgery will not interfere with hearing. Contact our Brisbane practice to learn more.

The Surgery

Usually performed under general anaesthetic, otoplasty may be either an inpatient or outpatient procedure. Children typically have a mandatory one-night stay in the hospital to ensure that there are no complications following surgery, while adults have the option of spending the night or returning home the same day.

During the procedure, an incision is made behind the ear. This allows Dr. Richardson to bring the ears back closer to the head and suture them in place. In some cases, the cartilage must be manipulated and the ears reshaped to optimise long-term results.

Risks

General surgical risks include bruising, swelling, bleeding, infection, keloid scarring, and adverse reactions to anaesthetic. Risks pertaining specifically to otoplasty include, tenderness, numbness, bleeding, pressure from bandages and sutures, prominent scarring, skin irregularities, and loss of surgical correction that may require additional surgery.

After Surgery

Following otoplasty at our Brisbane practice, special dressings cover the ears. These dressings are held in place by bandages, which are left in place for several days. Dr. Richardson recommends that a tennis headband be worn at night to hold the ears in their new position while sleeping for six weeks. Our nurse will contact the patient after the operation to oversee the recovery. Bruising and swelling is normal and may not diminish for several weeks. The sutures behind the ear will dissolve on their own.
