Gynecomastia, or male breast development, affects men of all ages and can be a source of embarrassment and low self-esteem. To help improve the body image of men with gynecomastia, we offer male breast reduction at our Brisbane, Queensland plastic surgery practice. During the male breast reduction procedure, our skilled surgeon, Dr. Philip Richardson, removes excess breast tissue to create a firmer, flatter, more masculine chest contour.
General anaesthetic is normally administered before male breast reduction surgery so that the patient will not experience any discomfort during the procedure. Dr. Richardson then excises the excess breast tissue. The remaining tissue is reshaped and held together with internal stitches.
The risks involved with male breast reduction include those associated with any surgery, such as an adverse reaction to general anaesthesia, swelling, bruising, infection, excessive bleeding, and prominent scarring. Additional risks pertaining specifically to gynecomastia surgery include an inadequate reduction of breast tissue, an excessive reduction of tissue leaving a depressed area under and around the nipple, asymmetry, and loose skin. Although patients should be aware of the possible risks of any surgical procedure, they can rest assured that Dr. Richardson is a skilled surgeon who does everything in his power to ensure the safety of his patients.
A pressure dressing must be worn for the first five days after gynecomastia surgery. At Brisbane Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, a nurse contacts patients daily after the procedure to ensure that they are recovering properly. Post-operative appointments are scheduled for one week, six weeks, and six months after surgery (each of these periodic check-ups is covered by the initial operation fee). Most patients are back to their normal routine within a couple weeks.
Through customised male breast reduction procedures, Dr. Richardson has been able to help many men find new confidence in the way their bodies look and feel.
