Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

Overview

Dr. Phil Richardson performs rhinoplasty ( nose surgery) at Brisbane Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery in Australia. Surgery can serve the purpose of opening the nasal airways, but may also be performed to give the patient a more aesthetically pleasing appearance by making the nose smaller or bigger and more proportionate to other features. This can be done either by adding or removing cartilage and bone.

The Surgery

Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) can improve appearance and help the nose to function more normally. The operation can be performed as a closed procedure, meaning there will be no external scars on the nose; or as an open procedure, where a scar is left at the base of the nose. Not all operations can be closed since some require a small incision at the base of the nose. Dr. Richardson will be able to determine whether or not you are suitable for a closed procedure during the initial rhinoplasty consultation.

If the nose needs to be smaller, cartilage and bone will be removed during surgery. However, to increase the size of the nose, cartilage and bone must be added. The tip of the nose will then be defined using suturing techniques. In the final steps of surgery, a splint will be placed on the nose to help it heal.

Risks

As with any other surgery, there are risks involved with rhinoplasty, including an adverse reaction to anaesthetic, bruising, swelling, bleeding, infection, and prominent scarring. Other risks specific to rhinoplasty include external scarring, healing problems, a misshapen nose, and airway obstruction.

After Surgery

Patients may be able to return home the same day as rhinoplasty (nose surgery) at our Brisbane practice. However, patients may also stay overnight. Packs will be removed from the nose the day after surgery. The splint and any sutures will be removed within a week.

Our nurse will contact patients each day after the procedure to ensure proper recovery. However, swelling and bruising are common during the first week and breathing through the nose may be difficult for a few weeks.
