Individuals suffering from a severe hand injury or those who have developed a condition such as carpal tunnel syndrome or Dupuytren’s Disease may be in need of hand surgery. Dr. Richardson has exceptional skill in hand surgery and can deliver outstanding results. If you need hand surgery, contact Brisbane Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery today.
Dupuytren’s Disease is a condition in which the tissue between the skin and tendons in the hand thicken, restricting movement of one or more of the fingers. The cause of this disease is unknown. Dupuytren’s Disease develops gradually, typically beginning with a small lump in the crease beneath the ring or pinky fingers. It may be months or years before the disease progresses, at which time a cord may develop from the palm of the hand to the fingers, pulling the fingers inward. Although there is no cure for Dupuytren’s Disease, surgery can be performed to release the cord, allowing the fingers to stretch and bend more freely. If you have Dupuytren’s Disease, schedule a consultation with Dr. Richardson to find out if you can benefit from reconstructive surgery at our Brisbane practice.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition resulting from a pinched nerve in the wrist. Symptoms of carpal tunnel include burning and tingling. This typically occurs at night since many people sleep with their wrists flexed, which squeezes the nerve. Carpal tunnel release surgery can be performed to reduce the pressure on the nerve and relieve discomfort. Consult Dr. Richardson to find out if carpal tunnel release surgery is right for you.

There are a variety of tumours that may appear in the hand or wrist; however, the majority of them are benign (non-cancerous). Benign tumours are often painless. However, they may become unsightly as they grow larger, or become painful in the event of a traumatic injury. In such cases, hand surgery may be recommended. Malignant (cancerous) tumours of the hand and wrist, though rare, will also require surgical removal. Surgery is typically quick, requiring a small incision to remove the tumour.
At Brisbane Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, we offer several paediatric plastic surgery procedures for children with deformities.
Cleft lip, or a separation of the upper lip, is a birth defect that can be corrected through surgery. This procedure is usually performed when the child is three to six months old. During surgery an incision is created on either side of the cleft and the skin and muscle are pulled together to restore the natural shape of the mouth.
In a similar procedure, a cleft palate, or the separation between the right and left sides of the roof of the mouth, can be surgically corrected. Tissue from each side of the cleft can be transferred to the middle of the mouth to form a complete palate. Surgery is typically performed when a child is between six and nine months old, as they are better able to tolerate surgery at this age. With the tissues and muscles connecting together to form a complete arch, the child will be able to eat and speak properly.
Children may need hand surgery to restore structure and function to a hand that has been affected by a birth defect or traumatic injury. Dr. Richardson can achieve a successful outcome using microsurgery, skin grafts, and other advanced technologies for hand surgery at his Brisbane practice.
Ear reconstruction may be necessary if a child is born with protruding ears or has a congenital deformity such as microtia. Ear reconstruction is typically performed when the patient is between five and seven years of age. Patients with microtia have grown enough by this time so that a sufficient amount of rib cartilage can be removed and reshaped to form the ear. In addition, having surgery performed at this young age may reduce or prevent teasing from peers. To find out if your child can benefit from reconstructive ear surgery, schedule a consultation with Brisbane surgeon, Dr. Richardson today.
Vascular anomalies are birthmarks resulting from the irregular development of lymph or blood vessels. While vascular anomalies typically remain unchanging, some become more aggressive and require treatment. Treatment may be necessary to maintain an aesthetic appearance, or to eliminate a lesion that is painful or presents a health risk. To learn more about vascular anomalies and treatment, contact Dr. Richardson.
Congenital naevi, more commonly known as moles, are pigmented spots on the skin, ranging from pink to dark brown in colour. Congenital naevi appear at birth and may be either benign or malignant. Malignant moles often have ridged edges or change in colour. If you suspect that a mole is malignant, contact Dr. Richardson. He has extensive experience with moles and can surgically remove yours through excision, leaving behind only a tiny scar. For more information about congenital naevi, contact Dr. Richardson today.
At Brisbane Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Richardson removes skin cancer down to the roots to make certain that it will not return. If you are in need of skin cancer surgery, contact Dr. Richardson at our Brisbane practice today.
Breast reconstruction is typically performed following a mastectomy, or the removal of a breast due to cancer. In some cases, the reconstructed breast may be added at the same time the cancerous breast is removed. However, it may also be performed as a separate procedure.
Dr. Richardson often uses breast implants during breast reconstruction at his Brisbane practice to replace the breast tissue that was removed during mastectomy. In some cases, however, enough tissue may remain attached to create a breast mound without the need for implants. Contact Brisbane Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery if you are considering breast reconstruction, and learn more about your options.
Most patients remain in the hospital from two to five days after breast reconstruction. Surgical drains will be used to remove any excess fluid after the procedure and may remain in place for up to a week after surgery. Patients often feel tired and sore for a week or two following breast reconstruction. However, pain can usually be regulated with prescription medication. Stitches are removed about a week after breast reconstruction.
