Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia, or male breast development, can affect men of all ages. To help alter the appearance of the breasts of men with gynecomastia, we offer male breast reduction as a form of gynaecomastia treatment at our Brisbane, Queensland plastic surgery practice. During the male breast reduction (gynaecomastia) procedure, plastic surgeon, Dr. Philip Richardson, removes excess breast tissue to create a firmer, flatter chest contour.

The outcomes shown are only relevant for this patient and do not necessarily reflect the results other patients may experience, as results may vary due to many factors including the individual’s genetics, diet and exercise.

Gynaecomastia, is an enlargement or excessive development of the male breast, affecting the appearance and shape of the chest and can develop in one breast (unilaterally) or in both breasts (bilaterally).

Gynaecomastia, or male breast development is common in men of any age and may develop as a result of:

  • Hormonal changes or imbalance
  • Weight gain
  • Hereditary conditions
  • Disease, such as liver disease
  • Certain medication
  • Use of non-prescription or recreational drugs, including anabolic steroids and marijuana

Excess breast tissue may also cause a man’s breasts to hang lower and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple).

General anaesthetic is normally administered before male breast reduction (gynaecomastia) surgery so that the patient will not experience any discomfort during gynaecomastia treatment at Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Richardson then excises the breast tissue. The remaining tissue is altered in shape to create a flatter chest contour and held together with internal stitches.

The risks involved with male breast reduction (gynaecomastia) include those associated with any surgery, such as an adverse reaction to general anaesthetic, swelling, bruising, infection, excessive bleeding, and prominent scarring. Additional risks pertaining specifically to surgical gynecomastia treatment include an inadequate reduction of breast tissue, an excessive reduction of tissue leaving a depressed area under and around the nipple, asymmetry, and loose skin.
