Male Breast Reduction (Gynaecomastia)

Why choose

Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Create Unison of the chest

Reduce male breast size

What is Gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia is an enlargement or excessive development of the male breast tissue, affecting the appearance and shape of the chest and can develop in one breast (unilaterally) or in both breasts (bilaterally). Gynaecomastia is a common medical condition and may present in men of any age due to hormonal imbalances, certain medications, genetics, or other factors. Depending on the severity, gynaecomastia may resolve itself, however, generally requires medication and/or surgery to correct and improve.

Gynaecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction surgery, can help address excess breast tissue in men and involves reducing the size of enlarged male breasts by removing excess glandular tissue and fat. Excess breast tissue can also cause a man’s breasts to hang lower and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple).

Male breast development is common in men of any age and may develop as a result of:

  • Hormonal changes or imbalances
  • Weight gain
  • Hereditary conditions
  • Certain medication
  • Disease (such as liver disease)
  • Use of non-prescription or recreational drugs, including anabolic steroids and marijuana

The best surgical approach for gynaecomastia will depend on the patient’s personal circumstances and customised to suit the patient’s unique needs and natural breast anatomy, all of which will be discussed during a consultation. This tailored approach ensures the reduction process aligns with the patient’s goals and desired outcomes, while addressing any specific concerns the patient may have.

As with any surgical procedure, male breast reduction surgery carries potential risks and complications that need to be considered. It is important to consult with an experienced specialist plastic surgeon to discuss the best treatment options, expected outcomes, what to expect during recovery and cover any potential risks associated with gynaecomastia surgery, including how these will be managed in the case complications do arise.

Our experienced Specialist Plastic Surgeons provide personalised consultations to create a tailored plan that is best suited to achieve the patient’s goals.

Why Consider Gynaecomastia Surgery

The decision to undergo gynaecomastia (male breast reduction) surgery is a personal choice that can be driven by medical, aesthetic or lifestyle factors, and should be a well informed and considered process.

Common reasons patients may consider male breast reduction include:

Improved chest appearance: Gynaecomastia may help patients achieve a flatter, firmer, and more masculine chest profile, more proportionate chest-to-body ratio and enhanced definition of the pectoral muscles

Comfort: Gynaecomastia Surgery may alleviate physical discomfort by eliminating any discomfort or pain associated with enlarged breast tissue

Permanent Results (In Most Cases): Glandular tissue does not grow back unless triggered by hormonal imbalance, medication, or weight gain. Results of gynaecomastia surgery are long-lasting in combination with a healthy lifestyle

Am I a suitable candidate for Gynaecomastia surgery?

Gynaecomastia Surgery or Male Breast Reduction Surgery may be appropriate for individuals who are experiencing enlarged breast tissue and are looking to achieve a flatter, more masculine chest profile and contour. Suitable candidates for Gynaecomastia Surgery typically share the following characteristics;

  • Diagnosed with Gynaecomastia
  • Good overall health
  • Stable weight and close
  • Realistic expectations
  • Stable hormones
  • 18+ years old
  • Non-smoker or a smoker willing to quit
  • Understands the risks and potential complications

What is involved with Gynaecomastia surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery is performed to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and sometimes glandular tissue in men. The procedure generally takes about 60 minutes and involves either liposuction, excision, or a combination of both.

Typically, liposuction techniques are used for gynaecomastia cases that primarily involve fatty tissue, while surgical excision may be necessary and more suitable for cases that require the removal of excess glandular tissue.

Liposuction involves small incisions made near the treatment area to insert a thin tube (cannula) to suction out excess fat. If the case requires surgical skin excision, this may require larger incisions, which are typically made around the areola or in other inconspicuous locations. In cases where excess glandular tissue requires removal, the skin will be tightened as needed.

Following surgery, patients will be provided with specific post-operative aftercare instructions to support optimum healing and recovery. Our in-house nursing team will be in touch the day after your surgery to check in on your recovery and answer any questions or concerns you may have following your procedure. Our patient care team will organise your follow-up care and complimentary review appointments to monitor recovery and address any concerns.

It is important for patients to follow post-operative care instructions to help aid a smooth recovery and to achieve the best possible results from gynaecomastia surgery. Adherence to appropriate post-surgery care is essential for optimal healing and results.

Gynaecomastia (Male Breast Reduction) Incisions & Scarring

The type of incisions and resulting scars from male breast reduction surgery depend on factors such as the surgical technique used, the type and severity of the patient’s gynaecomastia, the patient’s health and healing capacity as well as adherence to post-operative aftercare instructions.

Common Incision Types & Scarring

Liposuction Incision (minimal scarring)

  • Incision Location: Small (3–5 mm) incisions near the armpit or lower chest
  • Scarring: Minimal, fades over time and is barely noticeable
  • Best for: Fat-dominant gynecomastia (mild to moderate cases)

Periareolar Incision (hidden around the nipple)

  • Incision Location: Along the lower half of the areola (the darker skin around the nipple)
  • Scarring: Well-hidden due to natural colour difference of the areola
  • Best for: Glandular gynecomastia (moderate cases with dense breast tissue)

Inframammary Incision

  • Incision Location: Along the natural chest crease (under the breast)
  • Scarring: More visible than periareolar but can be concealed under the chest fold
  • Best for: Large amounts of glandular tissue & skin removal (post-weight loss cases)

Extended Incision

  • Incision Location: Extends from the areola to the sides of the chest
  • Scarring: More noticeable but will fade with appropriate post-operative aftercare
  • Best for: Severe gynecomastia with loose, sagging skin (e.g., after massive weight loss)

Realistic Expectations

Every patient has a unique anatomy, with unique limitations which have a pivotal effect on surgical outcomes. At BPCS, we encourage all patients considering gynaecomastia surgery to remember that all surgical procedures are tailored, and specific surgical outcomes are not guaranteed.

Every patient’s body is unique, and surgical outcomes will depend on factors such as anatomy, individual healing processes, and the surgical approach and techniques used. Open and honest communication about desired aesthetic outcomes, along with a clear understanding of the potential benefits and limitations of surgery, are essential to ensure patients are satisfied with their surgical results.

During a consultation, our surgeons aim to provide patients with as much information as possible about their procedure in order set realistic expectations of surgical outcomes, and tailor advice so that patients are able to make informed decisions that align with their health.

Patients are encouraged to remember that there can be no guarantee with any surgery. The realistic aim of any surgical procedure is improvement and not perfection. What to expect from

Your Gynaecomastia Consultation

The consultation is a crucial first step when considering any surgical procedure. It allows you to discuss your goals, concerns, and medical history, ensuring you receive personalised advice tailored to your needs. During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your suitability for the procedure, explain the potential risks and expected outcomes, and provide professional guidance to help you make an informed decision that aligns with your health. A thorough consultation also ensures that you have realistic expectations of surgical outcomes and understand all aspects of your procedure before deciding to proceed with surgery.

Before proceeding with any elective cosmetic procedure, all patients are required to obtain a referral from their GP or specialist, complete a pre-consultation body dysmorphic disorder screening questionnaire, and attend at least two pre-operative consultations.

What is the pre-consultation body dysmorphic disorder screening questionnaire?

It is an AHPRA requirement that all patients considering cosmetic surgery must complete a Body Dysmorphic Disorder questionnaire. This is to determine suitability for surgery and to ensure patients have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of their procedure prior to undergoing surgery.

Initial Consultation (mandatory)

On arrival for your initial consultation at Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, you will be welcomed in-clinic by our patient care team who will assist you with any required pre-consultation paperwork, reports and referrals prior to seeing your surgeon.

During your initial consultation, you will meet with your surgeon to discuss your goals, concerns and motivations for surgery as well as associated risks and realistic outcomes. This consultation gives you an opportunity to learn more about your chosen surgeon and their experience, and get all of your questions answered about what surgical approach is most appropriate for you. Your surgeon will review your medical history and discuss your aesthetic goals, and provide you with comprehensive information about your procedure, including recovery times, and the potential risks and complications associated, and how your surgeon plans to manage these, should any complications arise. Our surgeons seek to understand each patient’s unique lifestyle so that they can tailor a bespoke surgical plan in alignment with your goals to best achieve your desired aesthetic and functional outcomes.

Following your consultation with your surgeon, you will sit down with one of our dedicated patient liaisons, who will help you plan the next steps and answer any additional questions you may have. We will have a chat to you about when you are considering surgery, provide you with your personal quote and go through additional pertinent details of your surgical procedure to assist and ensure you can make an informed decision about surgery.

The rest of the team are here to answer any questions you may have to ensure that you feel comfortable, well-informed and prepared for your gynaecomastia procedure.

Subsequent Consultations (as required)

A second consultation is not required to proceed with gynaecomastia surgery, however, if patients feel they would benefit from additional consultations or have further questions they would like to discuss and explore in relation to their procedure, they are welcome to book subsequent consultations to further discuss the procedure. Additional consultations for your procedure are at no extra cost and can be conducted face-to-face or online via video call.

To book any additional consultations, please give our clinic a call and our team will be able to accommodate this for you.

Pre-Operative Nurse Appointment (mandatory)

Once a surgery date has been booked, our patient care team will organise your pre-operative appointment, which will be with one of our nurses, and scheduled 2 weeks prior to your booked surgery date. The purpose of this appointment is to run through your surgery plan and take your pre-operative images. It will be another opportunity for you to ask any additional questions you may have leading up to your surgery, as well as complete any necessary paperwork to ensure you are fully prepared for your upcoming procedure with us.

To find out more about what to expect from your gynaecomastia consultation or to book an initial consultation, you can submit your enquiry or call our clinic between 8:30am – 4:30pm Monday – Thursday or 8:30am – 4pm Fridays.

Everything you need to know about Gynaecomastia Surgery

Gynaecomastia Surgery

Gynaecomastia surgery is a customised procedure and the approach will be tailored to the patient’s individual anatomy.

Gynaecomastia surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, and in a fully accredited private hospital in Brisbane. General anaesthesia is administered by an anaesthesiologist – a registered medical practitioner fully trained to administer anaesthetic and monitor the patient while they are induced.

Following male breast reduction surgery, patients will be given a post-operative support garment to help minimise swelling and provide additional support during the healing process. Patients will be provided with specific post-operative instructions to aid in a smooth recovery.

Risks & Complications of Gynaecomastia Surgery

As with any surgical procedure, gynaecomastia surgery carries potential risks and complications. These may vary depending on individual factors, including overall health, the patient’s healing capacity and adherence to post-operative aftercare, and the surgical approach used. Some potential risks and complications of male breast reduction surgery include:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Haematoma
  • Seroma
  • Scarring
  • Changes in nipple sensation
  • Asymmetry
  • Anaesthetic risks
  • Wound healing issues
  • Breast tissue regrowth
  • Unsatisfactory results
  • Need for revision surgery

At Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, we place large emphasis on educating our patients regarding the potential risks of surgery to ensure both patient and surgeon are taking all measures to understand, minimise and prevent complications from occurring.

Gynaecomastia Recovery

Recovery from gynaecomastia surgery will vary from patient to patient, and depends on the extent and complexity of the procedure and the patient’s individual healing capacity.

Patients are advised to expect swelling and bruising around the chest area following gynaecomastia surgery. Patients may also experience pain, aches, pressure and discomfort, generally lasting up to two weeks after male breast reduction. Pain relief medication can help address discomfort after gynaecomastia surgery. Pain management will be at the discretion of your surgeon and your anaesthetist, and we will be able to prescribe oral pain medication to assist with any pain and discomfort during recovery.

Patients will be provided with instructions on wearing compression garments or bandages to reduce swelling and provide support to the chest area. These post-operative garments help to shape the chest and promote proper healing, and need to be worn for 5-6 weeks post gynaecomastia surgery.

During recovery, patients will be advised to

  • Keep the incisions clean and dry
  • Avoid smoking
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat nutritious food
  • Refrain from strenuous tasks
  • Take time to rest and recover
  • Avoid lying on your side
  • Wear compression garments as per your surgeon’s recommendations

All patients will be provided with specific post-operative aftercare instructions to support healing and recovery, and our team will schedule regular follow-ups monitor recovery and address any concerns. Adherence to appropriate post-surgery care is essential for optimal healing and results

Frequently Asked Questions

What is gynaecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the development of excess breast tissue in men of all ages due to hormonal imbalances, certain medications, genetics, or other factors. It is a common condition affecting up to 30% of the Australian male population. Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction surgery, can help address excess breast tissue in men and involves reducing the size of enlarged male breasts by removing excess glandular tissue and fat.

How common is gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia is very common and affects males at different life stages due to hormonal changes. Gynaecomastia is particularly common in boys going through puberty, occurring in more than half of all normal adolescent males, and usually goes away over time. In older men, enlargement of the breast tissue may occur in about one-third of men, who often have excess breast tissue.

How do you know if you need gynaecomastia or male breast reducton surgery?

You may need gynaecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) if you have persistent excess breast tissue that does not go away with diet and exercise. Male breast reduction surgery may be suitable for you if you experience any of the following:

You Have Enlarged Breast Tissue (Not Just Fat)

  • If your chest feels firm, rubbery, or glandular rather than soft fat, it may be true gynaecomastia (caused by hormonal imbalances)
  • If your chest is mostly fat, it could be pseudogynaecomastia, which may improve with weight loss.

You Experience Pain, Tenderness, or Discomfort

  • If your chest feels sore or sensitive, especially around the nipple area
  • If you feel tightness or discomfort when wearing fitted shirts or exercising

Your Gynaecomastia Has Lasted Over a Year

  • If breast tissue persists despite weight loss, exercise, or time, it’s unlikely to go away on its own
  • If you developed gynaecomastia during puberty and it hasn’t resolved after a few years, surgery may be the best option.

You Have Tried Other Solutions Without Success

  • If weight loss, hormonal treatments, or medications have not improved chest size, surgery may be the best way to restore a flatter, more masculine contour

What causes gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia happens when there’s an imbalance between testosterone and oestrogen, leading to breast tissue growth in males. The main causes of gynaecomastia are: hormonal imbalances, medications and drug use, underlying health conditions, and poor diet and lifestyle factors.

How long does male breast reduction last?

The results of male breast reduction surgery are typically considered permanent, as long as you maintain your ideal weight, commit to a healthy lifestyle and the cause of the condition is addressed, it is likely that the condition will not return. That said, it is important to keep in mind that weight gain can cause the remaining fat cells in your breasts to expand. This in turn can alter the results of your surgery.

Maintaining your ideal weight is important to prevent your breasts from developing excess fat again. Additionally, steroid and drug abuse must be avoided to prevent gynaecomastia from redeveloping.

How do you sleep after male breast reduction surgery?

The best position for sleeping after male breast reduction surgery is lying on your back. This position will prevent applying excessive pressure to the surgical area(s). You may also sleep on your side as long as it doesn’t cause any discomfort.

How long do you have to wear the compression garment after surgery?

You will need to wear your compression garments for about 6 weeks after male breast reduction surgery. Wearing the compression garment helps to support the treated area and reduces swelling.
