What is Gynaecomastia?
Gynaecomastia is an enlargement or excessive development of the male breast tissue, affecting the appearance and shape of the chest and can develop in one breast (unilaterally) or in both breasts (bilaterally). Gynaecomastia is a common medical condition and may present in men of any age due to hormonal imbalances, certain medications, genetics, or other factors. Depending on the severity, gynaecomastia may resolve itself, however, generally requires medication and/or surgery to correct and improve.
Gynaecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction surgery, can help address excess breast tissue in men and involves reducing the size of enlarged male breasts by removing excess glandular tissue and fat. Excess breast tissue can also cause a man’s breasts to hang lower and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple).
Male breast development is common in men of any age and may develop as a result of:
- Hormonal changes or imbalances
- Weight gain
- Hereditary conditions
- Certain medication
- Disease (such as liver disease)
- Use of non-prescription or recreational drugs, including anabolic steroids and marijuana
The best surgical approach for gynaecomastia will depend on the patient’s personal circumstances and customised to suit the patient’s unique needs and natural breast anatomy, all of which will be discussed during a consultation. This tailored approach ensures the reduction process aligns with the patient’s goals and desired outcomes, while addressing any specific concerns the patient may have.
As with any surgical procedure, male breast reduction surgery carries potential risks and complications that need to be considered. It is important to consult with an experienced specialist plastic surgeon to discuss the best treatment options, expected outcomes, what to expect during recovery and cover any potential risks associated with gynaecomastia surgery, including how these will be managed in the case complications do arise.
Our experienced Specialist Plastic Surgeons provide personalised consultations to create a tailored plan that is best suited to achieve the patient’s goals.

Why Consider Gynaecomastia Surgery
The decision to undergo gynaecomastia (male breast reduction) surgery is a personal choice that can be driven by medical, aesthetic or lifestyle factors, and should be a well informed and considered process.
Common reasons patients may consider male breast reduction include:
Improved chest appearance: Gynaecomastia may help patients achieve a flatter, firmer, and more masculine chest profile, more proportionate chest-to-body ratio and enhanced definition of the pectoral muscles
Comfort: Gynaecomastia Surgery may alleviate physical discomfort by eliminating any discomfort or pain associated with enlarged breast tissue
Permanent Results (In Most Cases): Glandular tissue does not grow back unless triggered by hormonal imbalance, medication, or weight gain. Results of gynaecomastia surgery are long-lasting in combination with a healthy lifestyle
Am I a suitable candidate for Gynaecomastia surgery?
Gynaecomastia Surgery or Male Breast Reduction Surgery may be appropriate for individuals who are experiencing enlarged breast tissue and are looking to achieve a flatter, more masculine chest profile and contour. Suitable candidates for Gynaecomastia Surgery typically share the following characteristics;
- Diagnosed with Gynaecomastia
- Good overall health
- Stable weight and close
- Realistic expectations
- Stable hormones
- 18+ years old
- Non-smoker or a smoker willing to quit
- Understands the risks and potential complications
What is involved with Gynaecomastia surgery?
Gynecomastia surgery is performed to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and sometimes glandular tissue in men. The procedure generally takes about 60 minutes and involves either liposuction, excision, or a combination of both.
Typically, liposuction techniques are used for gynaecomastia cases that primarily involve fatty tissue, while surgical excision may be necessary and more suitable for cases that require the removal of excess glandular tissue.
Liposuction involves small incisions made near the treatment area to insert a thin tube (cannula) to suction out excess fat. If the case requires surgical skin excision, this may require larger incisions, which are typically made around the areola or in other inconspicuous locations. In cases where excess glandular tissue requires removal, the skin will be tightened as needed.
Following surgery, patients will be provided with specific post-operative aftercare instructions to support optimum healing and recovery. Our in-house nursing team will be in touch the day after your surgery to check in on your recovery and answer any questions or concerns you may have following your procedure. Our patient care team will organise your follow-up care and complimentary review appointments to monitor recovery and address any concerns.
It is important for patients to follow post-operative care instructions to help aid a smooth recovery and to achieve the best possible results from gynaecomastia surgery. Adherence to appropriate post-surgery care is essential for optimal healing and results.
