Reduction Mammaplasty & Abdominoplasty

Reduction Mammaplasty (Breast Reduction) and Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Reduction Mammaplasty (breast reduction) and Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a common breast and body procedure that may be suitable for women who are seeking to alter the appearance of the stomach. Breast reduction mammaplasty and abdominoplasty can be performed as a combined procedure.

What does a Reduction Mammaplasty & Abdominoplasty procedure involve? (Breast Reduction & Tummy Tuck)

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a surgical procedure to remove skin and fatty tissue from the middle and lower abdomen, and to tighten muscles of the abdominal wall. Abdominoplasty is not a surgical treatment for being overweight and is not a weight loss procedure. Patients should be at their goal weight before undergoing any procedures as weight loss after surgery will impact results and can cause sagging and volume loss. There are a variety of techniques Dr. Richardson may employ for abdominoplasty. The procedure can be combined with other forms of body provedures, including suction-assisted lipectomy.

Breast reduction mammaplasty surgery involves the removal of skin and breast tissue through incisions made around the nipple, down to the inframammary fold and along the inframammary fold. Breast reduction mammaplasty surgery can be performed to remove small or large amounts of breast tissue, depending on the patient’s anatomy and personal preference. Some patients that have had breast reduction mammaplasty with Dr. Richardson have had more than 3kg removed from each breast. After the operation patients have smaller breasts that will have a scar that runs along the original incisions sites. With proper post-operative care, these scars will generally fade over time. You can find out more about breast reduction mammaplasty recovery here.

How long does the surgery take? (Breast Reduction & Tummy Tuck)

Breast Reduction mammaplasty and abdominoplasty surgery can take between 2-3 hours, and there is generally around 5-6 hours between hospital admission and discharge. If you are a patient that is staying overnight at St. Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital, you will be discharged the following day. During surgery, Dr. Richardson takes his time with each patient to ensure that the size and symmetry is optimal for both breasts and stomach, aligning patient safety with their desired goals and for optimum healing for long-term results. Dr. Richardson is experienced with his excisional techniques and strives to achieve outstanding results for his patients in Brisbane and Sunshine Coast.

Recovery after Reduction Mammaplasty & Abdominoplasty Surgery (Breast Reduction & Tummy Tuck)

Full recovery after breast reduction mammaplasty and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is six weeks. It is strongly recommended that patients avoid any strenuous activity or increased heart rate for the full six weeks to avoid compromised healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I take off work after breast reduction mammaplasty and abdominoplasty surgery??

It is recommended that patients take one week off work for office jobs and sedentary occupations, and two weeks for more active jobs. If your job requires you to engage in any strenuous activity or heavy lifting you should seek exemption from these activities for six weeks. You should also ensure that you are no longer on the stronger painkillers before returning to work.

How long after breast reduction mammaplasty and abdominoplasty surgery can I start driving again?

Dr. Richardson recommends that patients refrain from driving for one week after their surgical procedure. The primary reason is due to the likelihood of the patient still being on painkillers during this time. The secondary reason is to avoid any upper body strain in the early stages of recovery and avoid any dangerous situations that may arise from restricted mobility in the upper body.

How long until I can get back to the gym after an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)?

Dr. Richardson recommends that patients who are having a combined breast and body procedure such as breast reduction mammaplasty and tummy tuck surgery, to proceed with caution when returning to the gym.

The main consideration for patients wanting to get back to the gym is you should not engage in any physical activity that significantly elevates your heart rate for the first six weeks after surgery. This is to ensure the safety of the patient and optimal healing.

After one week patients are able to return to light walking around the block at very manageable pace. After three weeks patients are able to go back to the gym and resume light lower body exercise- nothing that engages the upper body. After six weeks patients can return to any and all normal exercise including weightlifting.

Will I have drains after breast reduction mammaplasty and abdominoplasty surgery?

The majority of patients undergoing post-pregnancy surgery with Dr. Richardson will wake up in recovery with drains. Surgical drains are intended to drain excess fluid and blood from the surgical site and prevent complications such as seroma.

The drains are left in for approximately 1-3 days depending on the amount of fluid drained. The nurses at the clinic will call you daily to monitor your drain levels until the time they are ready to be removed. The drain removal will be performed in the clinic by our team of registered nurses.

How painful is the recovery for a combined breast and body procedure?

Every patient heals and recovers differently. Pain after post-pregnancy (postpartum) surgery is generally very manageable with the prescribed pain relief, and often patients find they do not need the stronger pain relief during recovery.
