We prioritise patient safety, personalised care, and aesthetic precision to ensure the best possible outcome for all patients.

What is Revision Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Revision breast augmentation, also known as breast implant revision surgery, is a surgical procedure performed to correct or modify the results of a previous breast augmentation procedure. Breast implant revision surgery involves removing and replacing a patient’s breast implants, with one of the most common reasons being to increase implant size.

Breast revision surgery is also performed to address post-operative complications such as capsular contracture, breast implant rupture, breast implant rippling or breast implant bottoming-out. Patients may also seek a revision to address aesthetic concerns such as incorrect implant placement, incorrect implant choice, or asymmetry from previous surgery.

Revision surgery may also be appropriate many years after a successful breast augmentation procedure, to help maintain results and may be combined with a mastopexy (breast lift).

The best surgical approach for revision breast augmentation will depend on the patient’s personal circumstances, overall health and healing capacity, and will be customised to suit the patient’s unique needs and natural body anatomy, all of which will be discussed during a consultation. This tailored approach ensures the revision process aligns with the patient’s goals and desired outcomes, while addressing any specific concerns the patient may have.

As with any surgical procedure, breast implant revision surgery carries potential risks and complications that need to be considered. It is important to consult with an experienced specialist plastic surgeon to discuss the best treatment options, expected outcomes, what to expect during recovery and cover any potential risks associated with revision breast augmentation, including how these will be managed in the case complications do arise.

Our experienced Specialist Plastic Surgeons provide personalised consultations to create a tailored plan that is best suited to achieve the patient’s goals.

Why consider revision breast augmentation?

The choice to undergo revision breast augmentation is a personal decision that can be driven by medical, aesthetic or lifestyle factors, and the decision to proceed should be a well informed and considered process. Breast implant revision surgery is a procedure designed to replace or remove existing breast implants due to changes in aesthetic preferences, implant complications, or medical concerns. Over time, factors such as aging, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, or implant-related issues may lead individuals to consider revision surgery to maintain their desired breast shape and comfort.

Breast implant revision surgery is a highly customised procedure and is tailored to each patient’s body type, preferences, and desired results, ensuring that the outcomes are anatomically balanced and proportionate.

Common reasons patients may consider revision breast augmentation surgery include:

Changing Implant Size or Type: Some individuals may wish to increase or decrease their implant size or switch between saline and silicone implants.

Addressing Implant Complications: Conditions such as capsular contracture (scar tissue hardening around the implant), rupture, or implant displacement may require corrective surgery.

Correcting Breast Asymmetry: Over time, natural breast changes may lead to unevenness that can be improved with revision surgery.

Replacing Older Implants: While modern implants are long-lasting, some patients choose revision after 10-15 years to update their implants or adjust their results.

Personal Aesthetic Preferences: Aesthetic goals may change, and revision surgery allows individuals to achieve a look that better suits their current lifestyle preferences.

Am I a suitable candidate for breast implant revision?

A revision breast augmentation procedure may be suitable for you if events in your life such as weight loss, pregnancy or breastfeeding have affected the shape of your breasts.

Breast implant revision surgery is designed for individuals who wish to replace, remove, or adjust their breast implants due to medical concerns, aesthetic preferences, or implant-related complications. A suitable candidate for breast revision surgery typically:

Experiences Implant-Related Issues: Conditions such as capsular contracture (hardening of scar tissue), implant rupture, leakage, or displacement may require corrective surgery.

Wants to Change Implant Size or Type: Some individuals choose to increase or decrease implant size or switch between saline and silicone implants to achieve their desired outcome.

Notices Changes in Breast Appearance: Factors like aging, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy can impact breast shape, leading to asymmetry or changed breast position that may be improved with revision surgery.

Has Older Implants: While modern implants are designed to be long-lasting, some individuals opt for replacement after 10-15 years for maintenance or personal preference.

Is in Good General Health: Ideal candidates should be in overall good health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the procedure and results.

The most accurate way to determine whether a revision breast augmentation procedure is appropriate is through a personal consultation with a specialist plastic surgeon. To learn more about breast revision surgery, please contact our team to schedule a consultation with our specialist plastic surgeons.

Realistic Expectations

Every patient has a unique anatomy, with unique limitations which have a pivotal effect on surgical outcomes. At BPCS, we encourage all patients considering revision breast augmentation to remember that all surgical procedures are tailored, and specific surgical outcomes are not guaranteed.

Every patient’s body is unique, and surgical outcomes will depend on factors such as anatomy, individual healing processes, and the surgical approach and techniques used. Open and honest communication about desired aesthetic outcomes, along with a clear understanding of the potential benefits and limitations of surgery, are essential to ensure patients are satisfied with their surgical results.

During a consultation, our surgeons aim to provide patients with as much information as possible about their procedure in order set realistic expectations of surgical outcomes, and tailor advice so that patients are able to make informed decisions that align with their health.

Patients are encouraged to remember that there can be no guarantee with any surgery. The realistic aim of any surgical procedure is improvement and not perfection. Understanding your

Breast Augmentation Revision Options

Implants

The removal and replacement of implants in revision breast augmentation provides a reliable method for maintaining, increasing or decreasing breast volume. Implants come in various sizes, shapes, and materials, allowing for a high degree of customisation to achieve the desired breast size modification.

Fat Transfer

Fat transfer for breast enlargement involves using the patient’s own fat, harvested from another area of the body, to increase breast volume. This method is preferred by patients who do not want to re-insert new breast implants. Depending on the amount of available donor fat, it can provide a subtle to moderate increase in breast volume.

Hybrid of Fat and Implants

A hybrid approach combines both implants and fat transfer. This method can be particularly effective for achieving specific aesthetic goals, allowing for customisation in both shape and volume.

Implants & Mastopexy (Breast Lift)

The removal and replacement of implants in revision breast augmentation provides a reliable method for maintaining, increasing or decreasing breast volume. Implants come in various sizes, shapes, and materials, allowing for a high degree of customisation to achieve the desired breast size modification. This surgical approach is suitable for patients seeking to remove and replace their breast implants and address breast ptosis.

What to expect from

Your Revision Breast Augmentation Consultation

The consultation is a crucial first step when considering any surgical procedure. It allows you to discuss your goals, concerns, and medical history, ensuring you receive personalised advice tailored to your needs. During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your suitability for the procedure, explain the potential risks and expected outcomes, and provide professional guidance to help you make an informed decision that aligns with your health. A thorough consultation also ensures that you have realistic expectations of surgical outcomes and understand all aspects of your procedure before deciding to proceed with surgery.

Before proceeding with any elective cosmetic procedure, all patients are required to obtain a referral from their GP or specialist, complete a pre-consultation body dysmorphic disorder screening questionnaire, and attend at least two pre-operative consultations.

What is the pre-consultation body dysmorphic disorder screening questionnaire?

It is an AHPRA requirement that all patients considering cosmetic surgery must complete a Body Dysmorphic Disorder questionnaire. This is to determine suitability for surgery and to ensure patients have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of their procedure prior to undergoing surgery.

Initial Consultation (mandatory)

On arrival for your initial consultation at Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, you will be welcomed in-clinic by our patient care team who will assist you with any required pre-consultation paperwork, reports and referrals prior to seeing your surgeon.

During your initial consultation, you will meet with your surgeon to discuss your goals, concerns and motivations for surgery as well as associated risks and realistic outcomes. This consultation gives you an opportunity to learn more about your chosen surgeon and their experience, and get all of your questions answered about what surgical approach is most appropriate for you. Your surgeon will review your medical history and discuss your aesthetic goals, and provide you with comprehensive information about your revision breast augmentation procedure, including recovery times, and the potential risks and complications associated, and how your surgeon plans to manage these, should any complications arise. Our surgeons seek to understand each patient’s unique lifestyle so that they can tailor a bespoke surgical plan in alignment with your goals to best achieve your desired aesthetic and functional outcomes.

Following your consultation with your surgeon, you will sit down with one of our dedicated patient liaisons, who will help you plan the next steps and answer any additional questions you may have. We will have a chat to you about when you are considering surgery, provide you with your personal quote and go through additional pertinent details of your surgical procedure to assist and ensure you can make an informed decision about surgery.

The rest of the team are here to answer any questions you may have to ensure that you feel comfortable, well-informed and prepared for your breast implant revision procedure.

Subsequent Consultations (required)

A second consultation is required to proceed with revision breast augmentation surgery as it is considered a cosmetic procedure. A second consultation gives the patient the opportunity to further discuss their surgery, re-try implant sizes and ensure they have been able to have all their questions answered prior to deciding to proceed.

Patients are also welcome and encouraged to book multiple consultations to further discuss their procedure to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their decision to proceed. It is important to ensure both patient and surgeon are aligned in goals and expectations to ensure positive patient outcomes. Additional consultations for your procedure are at no extra cost and can be conducted face-to-face or online via video call.

To book any additional consultations, please give our clinic a call and our team will be able to accommodate this for you.

Pre-Operative Nurse Appointment (mandatory)

Once a surgery date has been booked, our patient care team will organise your pre-operative appointment, which will be with one of our nurses, and scheduled 2 weeks prior to your booked surgery date. The purpose of this appointment is to run through your surgery plan and take your pre-operative images. It will be another opportunity for you to ask any additional questions you may have leading up to your surgery, as well as complete any necessary paperwork to ensure you are fully prepared for your upcoming procedure with us.

To find out more about what to expect from your revision breast augmentation consultation or to book an initial consultation, you can submit your enquiry online or call our clinic between 8:30am – 4:30pm Monday – Thursday or 8:30am – 4pm Fridays.

Revision Breast Augmentation Recovery

Here at Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, we offer long-term follow-up care and support to ensure we are providing ongoing exceptional care to our patients. Patients are encouraged to contact our experienced team of nurses with any questions, issues or concerns they have at any point in their recovery period and beyond.

Recovery from revision breast augmentation surgery will vary from patient to patient, and depends on the extent and complexity of the procedure and the patient’s individual healing capacity.

Patients may experience pain, aches, pressure and discomfort, generally lasting up to two weeks after revision breast augmentation. Pain relief medication can help address discomfort after breast implant surgery, and pain management will be at the discretion of your surgeon and your anaesthetist. Our team will be able to prescribe oral pain medication to assist with any pain and discomfort during recovery.

Patients should allow one to two weeks for recovery after breast implant revision surgery before returning to work. Our nurses will contact patients the day after surgery to make sure there are no complications and will schedule post-operative check-ups at regular intervals post-surgery. A post-operative bra will be provided to patients to wear for the first six weeks to support the breasts and promote healing during the initial recovery period, as well as Dr. Richardson’s scar management cream to assist with scar healing. Additional post-operative bras and post-surgery scar cream can be purchased through our clinic.

It is recommended that patients refrain from driving for at least two weeks after undergoing revision breast augmentation mammoplasty surgery and avoid engaging in rigorous exercise for at least six weeks.

During recovery, patients will be advised to:

  • Keep the incisions clean and dry
  • Avoid smoking
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat nutritious food
  • Refrain from strenuous tasks
  • Take time to rest and recover
  • Avoid underwire bras
  • Avoid lying on your side
  • Wear provided post-operative compression garments as advised

All patients will be provided with specific post-operative aftercare instructions to support healing and recovery, and our team will schedule regular follow-ups monitor recovery and address any concerns. Adherence to appropriate post-surgery care is essential for optimal healing and results.

Breast Implant Revision Costs & Payment Options

In order to prepare financially for any surgical procedure, it is essential understand what costs and associated fees may be included in your breast implant revision quote. At Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery we aim to provide patients with clear and concise price breakdowns so patients are fully aware of what is included so they can make informed decisions, and to properly budget and plan ahead.

Our revision breast augmentation pricing will typically include your surgeon’s fee, hospital fees, general anaesthetic costs, post-operative compression garments and follow-up care with our in-house nursing team.

Breast Implant Revision surgery is a customised procedure, and costs will vary between patients. Every patient is different and surgery prices are quoted on a case-by-case basis subjective to the anatomy and complexities of each case, and time taken in theatre or chosen facility.

Breast Revision surgery is considered a cosmetic procedure and there are no Medicare and private health rebates available. In some rare cases, revision breast augmentation may be considered medical – this will be determined with you at your consultation. For patients who are seeking to combine a revision breast augmentation procedure with a mastopexy (breast lift), this is an additional procedure and will affect pricing. The total costs and any available rebates will be discussed with you at your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long until I can go swimming after breast implant revision surgery?

As a general guide, patients are able to submerge themselves in the pool or ocean two weeks after revision breast augmentation but should avoid actual swimming or going into any deep waters until at least six weeks post-operatively.

Patients are encouraged to seek individual advice based on their healing and recovery with our nursing team.

Is revision breast augmentation painful?

Revision breast augmentation pain depends on the incision site and implant placement. Patients tolerate pain in different ways and your surgeon will prescribe the most appropriate pain relief for you. You may feel tired and sore for several days following the operation and your breasts may remain swollen and sensitive to physical contact for a month or longer. You may experience a feeling of tightness in the chest area as your skin adjusts to your new breast size. You may even have swelling in your abdomen, and under your arms. The majority of bruising and swelling should resolve within 14 days.

Patients are encouraged to contact our nursing team with any questions or concerns they may have at any point during their recovery. Patients will also be provided with their surgeon’s contact details should they have any concerns or questions.

How soon after breast augmentation surgery can I get a revision?

Most surgeons would recommend waiting at least 6 months (ideally 12 months) before seeking breast revision surgery. It can take this long for the tissues to soften and relax, allowing your implants to drop and settle. Once you have fully healed and your final results are evident, then you and your surgeon can decide whether a revision procedure is suitable for you, while considering the potential risks and complications associated with further surgery.

How will I know if my breast implants have ruptured?

Signs of a ruptured breast implant depend on whether you have saline or silicone implants.

  • Saline Implant Rupture: The saline solution leaks out quickly and is absorbed by your body, leading to a noticeable decrease in breast size, shape changes, or asymmetry.

  • Silicone Implant Rupture: Often called a “silent rupture,” it may not show obvious symptoms right away, however, you may experience breast pain, swelling, lumps, changes in shape, firmness, or a feeling of tightness. An MRI or ultrasound is usually needed to confirm a rupture.

If you suspect a rupture, it is important to seek advice from a GP or specialist for a referral to consult with a specialist plastic surgeon for an evaluation and imaging tests to determine if replacement or removal is necessary.
