Understanding

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Why choose

Breast Lift Mastopexy

Lift the breast

Correct Symmetry

What is mastopexy surgery?

Mastopexy, commonly referred to as breast lift surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that raises and firms the breasts through the removal of excess skin, tightening the surrounding breast tissue, and reshaping the breast, whilst simultaneously lifting the position of the nipple.

The procedure is designed to correct breast ptosis and helps to address breasts that have lowered in position on the chest, and loss of firmness as a result of natural ageing, pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight fluctuations. A breast lift can also help balance the shape and size of unequal breasts and raise the position of downward-pointing nipples. Breast lift surgery may be performed alone or in conjunction with a breast augmentation, breast fat transfer, or some patients may choose to remove and replace existing breast implants with new ones.

What breast lift mastopexy surgery won’t do:

Breast lift mastopexy surgery will not significantly change the shape and size of your breasts or round out the upper portion of your breast. If you are seeking volume and shape definition in the upper pole of the breast, a breast augmentation mammoplasty may be a suitable surgery option.

The best surgical approach for a mastopexy procedure will depend on the patient’s personal circumstances and customised to suit the patient’s unique needs and natural breast anatomy and degree of ptosis, all of which will be discussed during a consultation. This tailored approach ensures the breast lift process aligns with the patient’s goals and desired outcomes, while addressing any specific concerns the patient may have.

As with any surgical procedure, mastopexy carries potential risks and complications that need to be considered. It is important to consult with an experienced specialist plastic surgeon to discuss the best treatment options, expected outcomes, what to expect during recovery and cover any potential risks associated with breast lift surgery including how these will be managed in the case complications do arise.

Our experienced Specialist Plastic Surgeons provide personalised consultations to create a tailored plan that is best suited to achieve the patient’s goals.

Why consider breast lift mastopexy surgery

The choice to undergo mastopexy surgery is a personal decision that can be driven by medical, aesthetic or lifestyle factors, and the decision to proceed should be a well informed and considered process.

Breast lift surgery is a highly customised procedure and is tailored to each patient’s body type, preferences, and desired results, ensuring that the outcomes are anatomically balanced and proportionate.

Common reasons patients may consider mastopexy surgery include:

Improve Shape: Breast lift alone can improve shape and create a more proportionate breast profile. When combined with fat transfer or breast implants, a breast lift can increase shape and volume concerns related to ageing, breastfeeding and weight loss

Correct Ptosis: Breast lift is designed to help reposition the breast tissue and the nipples to a more prominent and proportionate position, correcting breast ptosis

Improve Symmetry: Breast lift surgery can be used to balance and correct breast asymmetry, where one breast is smaller or different shape to the other

Improve Firmness: Breast lift surgery may assist with improving breast tissue firmness (dependent on existing breast tissue) or when combined with breast implants can reshape and raise the breasts, improving firmness in the upper pole of the breast and cleavage area

Will a breast lift increase my breast size?

A mastopexy (breast lift) procedure alone will not increase the size of your breasts, and additional procedures such as inserting breast implants via an augmentation mammoplasty (breast augmentation) may be recommended if you are seeking a fuller breast appearance or increased breast size.

It is important to note that while a breast lift procedure is designed to reshape, lift and reposition the breasts by removing excess skin, this inevitably results in a smaller bra cup size.

For patients wishing to increase breast volume and fullness, particularly in the upper pole of the breast, they may be more suited to a breast lift procedure combined with breast implants, known as augmentation mastopexy.

The potential outcomes of a combined breast lift and augmentation procedure include:

Improved Breast Shape: Breast augmentation may be used to address and improve both breast ptosis (sagging) and loss of breast volume

Enhanced Breast Profile: Women who have experienced significant changes in their breasts due to factors natural factors like; pregnancy, weight loss, or ageing may achieve a more anatomically proportionate breast profile through the lifting, redistribution and reshaping of breast tissue

Improved Symmetry: Breast implants may help address and correct breast asymmetry, creating balance between breasts

Defined Cleavage: Breast implants may be able to create and better define the appearance of the cleavage

Customised Results: Results are customised to the patient’s natural anatomy to best achieve the patient’s desired breast size, shape, and position

Am I a suitable candidate for mastopexy (breast lift) surgery?

A mastopexy (breast lift) may be suitable for you if events in your life such as weight loss, pregnancy or breastfeeding have affected the shape of your breasts.

Whether due to pregnancy, dramatic weight loss, or natural ageing processes, over time, a woman’s breasts may begin to show the effects of ptosis (breast sag). As a result, some women choose to undergo breast lift mastopexy surgery to help raise and reposition their breasts to their desired size, shape and position.

Mastopexy surgery may be suitable for you if you experience any of the following:

Breast Ptosis: Individuals who experience breast sagging (ptosis)

Volume Loss: Individuals who experience breast sagging (ptosis) and a loss of breast volume, often due to factors like pregnancy, weight loss, or ageing

Desire for Changed Breast Size and Shape: Those who wish to achieve not only a lifted breast appearance but also desire an increase in breast size, fullness, and projection.

Good Overall Health: Prospective patients should be in good general health, free from underlying medical conditions that might increase the risks associated with surgery and anaesthesia

Healthy & Stable Weight: It’s important for women considering breast lift surgery to have a stable weight, as significant weight fluctuations can affect the long-term results

Realistic Expectations: Prospective patients should have realistic expectations of surgical outcomes and limitations of breast lift surgery based on individual anatomy

Non-smoker: Ideal patients are those that are non-smokers or willing to quit smoking for a specified period before and after surgery. Smoking increases surgical risks and post-operative complications, and affects the healing process

Completed Childbearing: It is recommended that prospective patients are not planning any further pregnancies, as future pregnancies and breastfeeding can impact the long-term results of their breast lift results

What is breast ptosis?

Breast ptosis, commonly known as breast sagging or drooping, is a condition that occurs when breast tissue and nipples shift downward. It can be caused by factors such as:

  • Ageing
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Genetics

The most accurate way to determine whether a breast lift is appropriate is through a personal consultation with a specialist plastic surgeon. To learn more about breast lift surgery, please contact our team to schedule a consultation with our specialist plastic surgeons.

What is involved with mastopexy surgery?

A mastopexy (breast lift) procedure involves the surgical removal of excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the breast. For women with breast ptosis – whereby the nipple sits below the inframammary fold, or points down, a mastopexy may be a suitable procedure to reposition the breasts and areola complex proportionate to the patient’s anatomy.

Mastopexy surgery involves raising and reshaping the breast tissue to address issues such as sagging (ptosis), loss of volume, and changes in breast shape and profile. There are different methods of performing a mastopexy (breast lift) and the most suitable technique will be determined by the patient’s individual needs and personal preferences.

Following surgery, patients will be provided with specific post-operative aftercare instructions to support optimum healing and recovery. Our nursing team will be in touch the day after your surgery to check in on your recovery and answer any questions or concerns you may have following your procedure. Our patient care team will organise your follow-up care and complimentary review appointments to monitor recovery and address any concerns.

It is important for patients to follow post-operative care instructions to help aid a smooth recovery and to achieve the best possible results from their mastopexy procedure. Adherence to appropriate post-surgery care is essential for optimal healing and results.

Mastopexy Incisions & Scarring

The type of incisions and resulting scars from mastopexy (breast lift) surgery depend on factors such as the surgical technique used, the grade of breast ptosis, the patient’s health and healing capacity as well as adherence to post-operative aftercare instructions, and if additional procedures like breast augmentation is also performed.

Common Incision Types & Scarring

THE DONUT LIFT / PERIAREOLAR INCISION

The benefit of the lollipop lift is that it provides more control over shape and size than the donut lift, with minimal scarring. This technique involves the incision extending around the areola and vertically down the breast to the inframammary fold. The downside to this technique is that it still limits the effectiveness of the “lifting” component.

This technique is generally only used for on patients with mild to moderate breast ptosis.

THE LOLLIPOP LIFT / VERTICAL INCISION

The benefit of the lollipop lift is that it provides more control over shape and size than the donut lift, with minimal scarring. This technique involves the incision extending around the areola and vertically down the breast to the inframammary fold. The downside to this technique is that it still limits the effectiveness of the “lifting” component.

This technique is generally only used for on patients with mild to moderate breast ptosis.

THE ANCHOR LIFT / INVERTED “T” INCISION

The anchor lift technique is the most common and recommended technique for mastopexy surgery. The benefit of this technique is that it allows full control of the breast lift, and the excision of the necessary skin to create shape and lift effectively. This technique involves an incision around the areola, extending vertically down the breast, and continuing horizontally along the inframammary crease. The downside is more scarring.

This is the most common technique and is generally used for patients with moderate to significant breast ptosis.

Realistic expectations

Every patient has a unique anatomy, with unique limitations which have a pivotal effect on surgical outcomes. At BPCS, we encourage all patients considering breast lift mastopexy to remember that all surgical procedures are tailored, and specific surgical outcomes are not guaranteed.

Every patient’s body is unique, and surgical outcomes will depend on factors such as anatomy, individual healing processes, and the surgical approach and techniques used. Open and honest communication about desired aesthetic outcomes, along with a clear understanding of the potential benefits and limitations of surgery, are essential to ensure patients are satisfied with their surgical results.

During a consultation, our surgeons aim to provide patients with as much information as possible about their procedure in order set realistic expectations of surgical outcomes, and tailor advice so that patients are able to make informed decisions that align with their health.

Patients are encouraged to remember that there can be no guarantee with any surgery. The realistic aim of any surgical procedure is improvement and not perfection. To learn more about breast lift surgery, please contact our team to schedule a consultation with our specialist plastic surgeons.

What to expect from

Your Mastopexy Consultation

The consultation is a crucial first step when considering any surgical procedure. It allows you to discuss your goals, concerns, and medical history, ensuring you receive personalised advice tailored to your needs. During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your suitability for the procedure, explain the potential risks and expected outcomes, and provide professional guidance to help you make an informed decision that aligns with your health. A thorough consultation also ensures that you have realistic expectations of surgical outcomes and understand all aspects of your procedure before deciding to proceed with surgery.

Before proceeding with any elective cosmetic procedure, all patients are required to obtain a referral from their GP or specialist, complete a pre-consultation body dysmorphic disorder screening questionnaire, and attend at least two pre-operative consultations.

What is the pre-consultation body dysmorphic disorder screening questionnaire?

It is an AHPRA requirement that all patients considering cosmetic surgery must complete a Body Dysmorphic Disorder questionnaire. This is to determine suitability for surgery and to ensure patients have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of their procedure prior to undergoing surgery.

Initial Consultation (mandatory)

On arrival for your initial consultation at Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, you will be welcomed in-clinic by our patient care team who will assist you with any required pre-consultation paperwork, reports and referrals prior to seeing your surgeon.

During your initial consultation, you will meet with your surgeon to discuss your goals, concerns and motivations for surgery as well as associated risks and realistic outcomes. This consultation gives you an opportunity to learn more about your chosen surgeon and their experience and get all of your questions answered about what surgical approach is most appropriate for you. Your surgeon will review your medical history and discuss your aesthetic goals, and provide you with comprehensive information about your breast lift procedure, including recovery times, and the potential risks and complications associated, and how your surgeon plans to manage these, should any complications arise. Our surgeons seek to understand each patient’s unique lifestyle so that they can tailor a bespoke surgical plan in alignment with your goals to best achieve your desired aesthetic and functional outcomes.

Following your consultation with your surgeon, you will sit down with one of our dedicated patient liaisons, who will help you plan the next steps and answer any additional questions you may have. We will have a chat to you about when you are considering surgery, provide you with your personal quote and go through additional pertinent details of your surgical procedure to assist and ensure you can make an informed decision about surgery.

The rest of the team are here to answer any questions you may have to ensure that you feel comfortable, well-informed and prepared for your mastopexy procedure.

Second Consultation (required)

Patients are also welcome and encouraged to book multiple consultations to further discuss their procedure to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their decision to proceed. It is important to ensure both patient and surgeon are aligned in goals and expectations to ensure positive patient outcomes. Additional consultations for your procedure are at no extra cost and can be conducted face-to-face or online via video call.

To book any additional consultations, please give our clinic a call and our team will be able to accommodate this for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is mastopexy surgery?

A mastopexy, also known as breast lift surgery, is a surgical procedure that raises and firms the breasts. The procedure involves tightening the breast tissue and removing skin to alter the shape and support a new breast contour, achieving a more firm and raised breast appearance. The internal breast tissue is generally altered during this process too.

A breast lift mastopexy procedure can also reduce the size of the areola (the skin surrounding the nipple), which can become enlarged over time.

What are the scars like after breast lift surgery?

Immediately following breast lift surgery, breast lift scars will appear pink or red and slightly raised, and may thicken slightly over the first few months after surgery.

Over time these will soften and gradually fade with appropriate post-operative scar care. How well the scars heal and the appearance of the final scars depends on a number of factors, such as how well your skin generally heals or whether you are prone to hypertrophic or keloid scars, and how closely patients follow their surgeon’s post-surgical scar management instructions –including scar creams, silicone sheets, and avoiding sun exposure. Your surgeon and the BPCS nursing team will advise you of optimal scar treatment and management techniques to help your scars heal based on your individual case.

Is a breast lift the same as a breast reduction?

While many of the techniques and principles between a breast lift and breast reduction are similar, they are distinctly different procedures, performed for different purposes with different outcomes.

oA breast lift (mastopexy) raises and reshapes the breasts by removing excess skin and breast tissue, without significantly changing breast size.

oA breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size and weight of the breasts, often relieving physical discomfort such as back or neck pain.

  • A breast lift (mastopexy) raises and reshapes the breasts by removing excess skin and breast tissue, without significantly changing breast size.
  • A breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size and weight of the breasts, often relieving physical discomfort such as back or neck pain.

How painful is recovery after a breast lift?

Pain after breast lift mastopexy surgery is generally very manageable with the prescribed pain relief, and often patients find they do not need the stronger pain relief during recovery.

How long after mastopexy surgery can I start driving?

Patients are advised to refrain from driving for one week after their breast lift mastopexy surgery. The primary reason is due to the likelihood of the patient still being on painkillers during this week. The secondary reason is to avoid any upper body strain in the early stages of recovery for breast lift mastopexy and avoid any dangerous situations that may arise from restricted mobility in the upper body.

How long until I can get back to the gym after breast lift surgery?

Patients who have undergone breast lift mastopexy surgery are advised to proceed with caution when returning to the gym. Patients are encouraged to not engage in any physical activity that significantly elevates their heart rate for the first six weeks after surgery as this can compromise their safetly and healing.

After one week, patients are able to return to light walking around the block at very manageable pace. By three weeks, patients are able to go back to the gym and resume light lower body exercise – nothing that engages the upper body. At six weeks patients can return to any and all normal exercise including weightlifting, pending clearance from our nursing team at their 6-week, end of recovery check-up.

How long after breast lift surgery can I go swimming?

Following mastopexy surgery, as a general guide, patients are able to submerge themselves in the pool or ocean after 3 weeks. Patients are advised to avoid actual swimming or going into any deep waters for six weeks post-operatively. Patients should also ensure that their breast lift mastopexy scars are not exposed to sunlight while they are healing, as this can cause permanent darkening of the scars.

Patients are encouraged to follow their individual post-operative aftercare advice and seek clarification with our nursing team if they have any specific questions.

Will a breast lift improve my cleavage?

A mastopexy (breast lift) procedure, in some cases, can improve the appearance of your cleavage, however, the degree of improvement depends on a number of factors including the amount of existing breast tissue. As a mastopexy procedure is designed to reposition and reshape the breasts, lifting them higher on the chest, rather than increasing breast volume, therefore it may not necessarily lead to an improved or defined cleavage in all cases.

Patients that are seeking a more pronounced and defined cleavage, and fullness in the cleavage area may be more suited to a combined mastopexy (breast lift) and augmentation procedure. This combination can both lift and increase breast volume, creating a fuller, more pronounced and noticeable cleavage.
