With a long-standing interest and passion for skin cancer management and research, Dr. Rughani is often sought to present his clinical research at national and international conferences and is also currently leading a study on scalp Squamous Cell Carcinomas (SCCs) in Queensland, with active research interests including; Melanoma, advanced SCC, and in Facial and Scalp reconstruction, which keeps him at the forefront of any advancements in skin cancer treatment and management.
Beyond Dr. Rughani’s surgical knowledge and experience, he believes that every patient deserves personalised and compassionate care. Dr. Rughani places strong emphasis on taking the time to listen to his patient’s concerns, answer questions, and works with his patients to develop a treatment plan that meets their unique needs, in order to deliver the best possible outcome.
Outside of the operating theatre, Dr. Rughani loves spending time with his wife and two daughters, and in his free time, he enjoys playing cricket, squash, cooking and baking.

Dr. Rughani brings a wide range of surgical skills to his practice at Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery with particular interest in skin cancer excision and reconstructive cancer and trauma cases. He has always been passionate about skin cancer management and is currently leading a study on scalp Squamous Cell Carcinomas (SCCs) in Queensland, with active research interests including; Melanoma, advanced SCC, and in Facial and Scalp reconstruction.
Dr. Rughani is widely sought for his experience in complex skin cancer removal procedures for patients across south-east Queensland, and has over 6 years experience performing major reconstructive surgery for cancer and trauma patients. He is also involved in major skin cancer cases from all over Queensland through his appointments at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital. Education & Training
Dr. Milap Rughani undertook his tertiary studies at the University of Leeds, obtaining a Bachelor of Science (First class Honours), Bachelor of Medicine as well as a Bachelor of Surgery. He then went on to complete his plastic surgery training in Oxford, UK, and completed postgraduate research in Melanoma at the University of Oxford, with his research being highlighted at the University of Oxford (Green-Templeton College) Alumni.
Dr. Rughani has trained both locally and abroad, undertaking further training in the USA, India, the UK and Australia in order to gain knowledge and experience to improve and apply surgical best practice for all of his patients with the aim of providing his patients with the best possible outcome. He is across all aspects of plastic surgery with special interests in skin cancer excision, reconstructive facial surgery and cosmetic body surgery.
In addition to Dr. Rughani’s plastic surgery training, he has also completed subspecialty surgical fellowships in Microsurgical reconstruction of the face, head and body through the Princess Alexandra Hospital, in Brisbane, and Melanoma & Surgical Oncology (Melanoma Institute Australia, Sydney).
Throughout his career, Dr. Rughani has published sixteen research papers and presents his work regularly at national and international conferences.
Dr. Rughani has also completed a Diploma in Higher Education (University of Oxford) and was awarded the Queensland Clinical Educator of the Year Award in 2020 by the Confederation of Postgraduate Medical Education Councils. He has been awarded fellowships to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Royal College Surgeons England. He is a Fellow and member of The Royal College of Surgeons in England FRCS (Plast.) as well as of The Australasian College of Surgeons FRACS (Plast.).
Most recently, Dr. Rughani has spent the last 6 years as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Royal Brisbane & Womens’ Hospital where he has performed major surgery for cancer and trauma patients. He is a member of the head & neck and melanoma multidisciplinary team meetings; which receive referrals from all over Queensland.
