Breast Augmentation Mammoplasty Using the Inframammary Incisional Technique

Breast augmentation mammoplasty patients are often surprised by the number of breast implant options and techniques available to them. From shape and texture to where the breast implant is placed, breast augmentation mammoplasty offers women considerable control over their final outcomes.

Among the choices that can most dramatically influence the final result is the location of the incision through which the breast implant is placed. For many patients of Brisbane Plastic Surgeon Dr. Phil Richardson, breast augmentation mammoplasty using the inframammary technique often leads to satisfying results for patients, depending on their specific goals and expectations. Of course, the most appropriate incisional technique for your case will depend on multiple factors, including your full understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of alternative techniques.

During your initial consultation with plastic surgeon Phil Richardson, he will advise you of all of your options, help you define your goals and expectations, and provide you with all of the information you need to make an educated decision regarding the course of your care.

What Is an Inframammary Incision?

“Infra” is a Latin word literally translated as “below,” so “inframammary” means “below the breast.” Using the inframammary incisional technique, Dr. Richardson carefully places the incision in the fold directly beneath the breast, where the lower part of the breast meets the skin of the chest. Through this incision, he creates a pocket into which he inserts the breast implant.

What Are the Advantages of This Technique?

Women who choose to have their breast augmentation mammoplasty surgeries performed using the inframammary incisional technique may experience the following advantages:

  • Resulting scars are concealed in the breast fold, making them able to be hidden behind commonly worn clothing
  • The risk of interference with breast feeding is lower compared to the periareolar (a/k/a the nipple) technique.
  • Dr. Richardson has greater control over the placement of the implant as he is able to work closer to the breast.
  • Because the incision made using this technique is relatively larger than with other techniques, it can be suitable for the placement of pre-filled silicone breast implants.

The technique is not a guarantee of good results, however. If you want to know if the technique may be of benefit to you, it’s best to speak to a surgeon before making the decision.

What Are the Disadvantages of This Technique?

This technique is generally well suited to women with somewhat larger breasts to begin with, as they are more likely to have clear, defined breast folds in which to make the incisions. Women with smaller breasts may be better suited to alternative techniques. In addition, women who think that they may wish to have their breasts further enlarged in the future may not be suitable candidates for the inframammary incisional technique because the future enlargement may cause the scars to rise up on the breast, thereby becoming more visible.

Dr Phil Richardson will work with you to determine the most suitable approach in your case, taking into consideration your body type and what you hope to accomplish through surgery.
