Why choose

labiaplasty

Reduce friction or pinching

What is labiaplasty surgery?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to alter the size or shape of the labia minora (the inner lips of the vagina) and sometimes the labia majora (the outer lips of the vagina). Patients may seek labiaplasty if they experience physical symptoms such as discomfort, chafing, or difficulty with certain clothing or activities, while others may consider the procedure for aesthetic reasons related to their personal preferences.

Labiaplasty can involve reducing or reshaping the labia to address appearance or functional concerns. This procedure can also correct congenital defects such as an enlarged clitoral hood or excessive labial tissue. The surgery is usually performed as a day procedure under anaesthesia, and recovery times will vary depending on the individual.

As with any surgical procedure, labiaplasty carries potential risks and complications that need to be considered. It is important to consult with an experienced specialist plastic surgeon to discuss the best treatment options, expected outcomes, what to expect during recovery and cover any potential risks associated with labiaplasty surgery, including how these will be managed in the case that complications do arise.

Our experienced Specialist Plastic Surgeons provide personalised consultations to create a tailored plan that is suited to the patient’s goals.

Why do patients consider labiaplasty surgery

The choice to undergo a labiaplasty procedure is a highly personal decision that can be driven by medical, aesthetic or lifestyle factors, and the decision to proceed should be a well informed and considered process.

Common reasons patients may consider labiaplasty include:

Functional Concerns: Some women may experience discomfort or irritation when wearing certain types of clothing. Pain and discomfort are also common, as some women may experience irritation, chafing, or pain during physical activities and exercise, such as cycling, running, or sexual activity.

Hygiene: An enlarged labia may cause difficulties in maintaining hygiene, which can lead to recurrent infections or irritations

Tearing: Excess labial tissue may be prone to tearing or injury

Cosmetic Concerns: Some women may choose labiaplasty for aesthetic reasons, if they are concerned about the appearance of their labia and wish to change their size or shape to achieve a more symmetrical or reduced labial appearance

It is important to remember that the labia can vary significantly in size, colour, and shape, and these differences are all normal. Choosing to undergo labiaplasty is a personal decision, and the reasons can differ greatly between individuals.

At Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, we encourage patients considering labiaplasty to consult with an appropriately qualified plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Milap Rughani or Dr. Richardson to discuss their reasons for considering labiaplasty, what the procedure involves, possible risks, and the expected recovery process. Every person’s anatomy and goals are unique, and results will differ between individuals.

Am i a suitable candidate for labiaplasty surgery?

You may be a suitable candidate for labiaplasty surgery if you are experiencing concerns related to the size or shape of your labia minora. Some individuals consider this procedure to address functional issues such as discomfort with clothing, irritation during exercise, or pain with sexual activity. Others may seek labiaplasty for aesthetic reasons related to their personal preferences.

Patients who plan to have children in the future are encouraged to delay undergoing a labiaplasty if possible until they have finished having children, as additional pregnancies can affect labiaplasty results and can lead to further surgery.

A good candidate for labiaplasty is generally someone who:

  • Is seeking to remove excess skin and fat from the labia
  • Is in good overall health
  • Is a non-smoker/vaper or is willing to abstain from smoking/vaping for at least six weeks before surgery and six weeks post-surgery
  • Has realistic expectations about the outcomes and limitations of surgery
  • Understands the potential risks, benefits, and recovery involved
  • Is considering surgery for their own reasons, rather than external pressure

It is important to have a consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon to determine if this procedure is appropriate for you. During this appointment, your surgeon will assess your anatomy, discuss your goals, and explain the surgical options, recovery, and potential risks.

Labiaplasty recovery timeline

Week 1

  • Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common
  • Use ice packs (if recommended) and take prescribed pain relief as directed
  • Gentle walking is encouraged to support circulation
  • Keep the area clean and dry; avoid tight clothing

Weeks 2–3

  • Swelling and tenderness will usually start to improve
  • Light daily activities can be resumed
  • Continue avoiding vigorous exercise, cycling, or sexual activity

Weeks 4–5

  • Most patients feel more comfortable with reduced swelling
  • You may slowly return to low-impact exercise as advised by your surgeon
  • Incisions are still healing—ongoing care is important

Week 6+

  • Many patients are cleared to resume sexual activity and regular exercise
  • Final results will continue to settle over the coming months
  • Always seek clearance with your surgeon before returning to any high-impact or sexual activity

All patients are encouraged to remember that recovery will vary for everyone. Always follow your surgeon’s personalised advice and attend your scheduled follow-up appointments with our nurses.

What does labiaplasty surgery involve?

Labiaplasty is a customised surgical procedure performed to modify the size or shape of the labia minora (the inner lips of the vagina) and sometimes the labia majora (the outer lips of the vagina). During Labiaplasty surgery, your surgeon will carefully reshape and/or reduce the labial tissue, based on your needs, through the removal of excess skin, tissue and fat.

Labiaplasty is generally performed as a day procedure, and patients are able to go home on the same day. The surgery is usually performed under either local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia. The specific technique used will depend on your anatomy and goals, and your surgeon will discuss the most suitable approach during your consultation.

Dissolvable stitches are typically used in labiaplasty surgery; therefore, you will not need to have sutures removed post-surgery. Recovery usually takes several weeks, with swelling and tenderness most noticeable in the first one to two weeks.

Following labiaplasty surgery, patients will be provided with specific post-operative aftercare instructions to support healing and recovery. Our nursing team will be in touch the day after your surgery to check in on your recovery and answer any questions or concerns you may have following your procedure. Our patient care team will organise your follow-up care and complimentary review appointments to monitor recovery and address any concerns.

It is important for patients to follow post-operative care instructions to help aid recovery from their labiaplasty procedure. This includes avoiding vigorous exercise and sexual activity until your surgeon advises it is safe to resume. Adherence to appropriate post-surgery care is essential for healing and results.

Labiaplasty surgery incisions & scarring

The type of incisions and resulting scars from labiaplasty depend on factors such as the surgical technique used, the amount of excess skin removed, the patient’s health and healing capacity and adherence to post-operative aftercare instructions, as well as if any additional procedures such as whether breast lift mastopexy, breast augmentation mammoplasty, or a combination of these are also performed.

The procedure involves incisions, which will result in some degree of scarring, and the type and length of the incisions will vary depending on the extent of the procedure.

During labiaplasty surgery, incisions are made to reshape or reduce the labia minora, and the placement and technique used will depend on your individual anatomy and the goals discussed with your surgeon. Common labiaplasty techniques include:

Trim method

Excess tissue along the edge of the labia is removed, with the incision running along the natural border.

Wedge method

A small, wedge-shaped piece of tissue is removed from the thicker part of the labia, with the natural edge preserved.

Both approaches are designed to keep scars as discreet as possible; however, some scarring is inevitable. In the early stages, scars may appear slightly red or firm, but they typically fade and soften over time.

If you are considering labiaplasty, the surgeons at BPCS will explain the incision options, expected recovery, and the likely appearance of scars based on your unique situation.

Realistic expectations

Every patient has a unique anatomy, with unique limitations which have a pivotal effect on surgical outcomes. At BPCS, we encourage all patients considering labiaplasty to remember that all surgical procedures are tailored, and specific surgical outcomes are not guaranteed.

Every patient’s body is unique, and surgical outcomes will depend on factors such as anatomy, individual healing processes, and the surgical approach and techniques used. Open and honest communication about desired aesthetic outcomes, along with a clear understanding of the potential benefits and limitations of surgery, is essential to ensure patients are satisfied with their surgical results.

During a consultation, the surgeons at BPCS aim to provide patients with as much information as possible about their procedure in order set realistic expectations of surgical outcomes, and tailor advice so that patients are able to make informed decisions that align with their health.

Patients are encouraged to remember that there can be no guarantee with any surgery. The realistic aim of any surgical procedure is improvement and not perfection. To learn more about labiaplasty surgery, please contact our team to schedule a consultation with our specialist plastic surgeons.

What to expect from

Your Labiaplasty Consultation

The consultation is a crucial first step when considering any surgical procedure. It allows you to discuss your goals, concerns, and medical history, ensuring you receive personalised advice tailored to your needs. During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your suitability for the procedure, explain the potential risks and expected outcomes, and provide professional guidance to help you make an informed decision that aligns with your health. A thorough consultation also ensures that you have realistic expectations of surgical outcomes and understand all aspects of your procedure before deciding to proceed with surgery.

Before proceeding with any elective cosmetic procedure, all patients are required to obtain a referral from their GP or specialist, complete a pre-consultation body dysmorphic disorder screening questionnaire, and attend at least two pre-operative consultations.

What is the pre-consultation body dysmorphic disorder screening questionnaire?

It is an AHPRA requirement that all patients considering cosmetic surgery must complete a Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) questionnaire. This is to determine suitability for surgery and to ensure patients have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of their procedure prior to undergoing surgery.

Initial Consultation (mandatory)

On arrival for your initial consultation at Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, you will be welcomed in-clinic by our patient care team who will assist you with any required pre-consultation paperwork, reports and referrals prior to seeing your surgeon. We will also be available should you have any questions about potential surgery, dates or booking information.

During your initial consultation, you will meet with your surgeon to discuss your goals, concerns and motivations for surgery as well as associated risks and realistic outcomes. This consultation gives you an opportunity to learn more about your chosen surgeon and their experience, and get all of your questions answered about what surgical approach is most appropriate for you. Your surgeon will review your medical history and discuss your aesthetic goals, and provide you with comprehensive information about your labiaplasty procedure, including recovery times, the potential risks and complications associated, and how your surgeon plans to manage these should any complications arise. the surgeons at BPCS seek to understand each patient’s unique lifestyle so that they can tailor a bespoke surgical plan in alignment with your goals.

Following your consultation with your surgeon, you will sit down with one of our dedicated patient liaisons, who will help you plan the next steps and answer any additional questions you may have. We will have a chat with you about when you are considering surgery, provide you with your personal quote and go through additional pertinent details of your surgical procedure to assist and ensure you can make an informed decision about surgery.

The rest of the team is here to answer any questions you may have to ensure that you feel comfortable, well-informed and prepared for your labiaplasty procedure.

Subsequent Consultations (as required)

A second consultation is typically required to proceed with labiaplasty if deemed a cosmetic procedure. If your surgeon classifies your labiaplasty procedure as medically required, you will only need to attend one consultation. If patients feel they would benefit from additional consultations or have further questions they would like to discuss and explore in relation to their procedure, they are welcome to book subsequent consultations to further discuss the procedure. Additional consultations for your procedure are at no extra cost and can be conducted face-to-face or online via video call.

To book any additional consultations, please give our clinic a call and our team will be able to accommodate this for you.

Pre-Operative Nurse Appointment (mandatory)

Once a surgery date has been booked, our patient care team will organise your pre-operative appointment, which will be with one of our nurses, and scheduled two weeks prior to your booked surgery date. The purpose of this appointment is to run through your surgery plan and take your pre-operative images. It will be another opportunity for you to ask any additional questions you may have leading up to your surgery, as well as complete any necessary paperwork to ensure you are fully prepared for your upcoming procedure with us.

To find out more about what to expect from your labiaplasty consultation or to book an initial consultation, you can submit your enquiry or call our clinic between 8:30am – 4:30pm Monday – Thursday or 8:30am – 4pm Fridays.

Everything you need to know about labiaplasty surgery

What To Expect During Labiaplasty Surgery

During Labiaplasty surgery, your surgeon will carefully reshape and/or reduce the labial tissue based on your needs. The exact details of your procedure will depend on your anatomy, the concerns being addressed, and the surgical technique recommended by your specialist plastic surgeon to achieve this.

There are various methods for labiaplasty and the selection of the most appropriate technique will depend on the natural shape of the area and the desired appearance. Your surgeon will assess and discuss the most suitable combination of procedures in detail with you, along with the benefits, risks and limitations associated prior to surgery.

Dissolvable sutures are commonly used to close the incisions. The procedure generally takes one to two hours, depending on the complexity. After surgery, you will spend time in recovery before going home the same day.

Patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the first couple of weeks. Following your surgeon’s post-operative care instructions—including rest, hygiene measures, and avoiding strenuous activity—supports healing and helps reduce the risk of complications.

Labiaplasty is always performed under general anaesthetic, and in a fully accredited private hospital in Brisbane. General anaesthesia is administered by an anaesthesiologist – a registered medical practitioner fully trained to administer anaesthetic and monitor the patient while they are induced. Labiaplasty is generally performed as a day procedure, however, in some cases, patients may be advised to stay overnight or may opt to if the procedure is performed in conjunction with other surgeries such as breast augmentation mammoplasty, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), or blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). Patients will be advised during their consultation if an overnight stay is recommended.

Following labiaplasty surgery, patients will have support dressings over the wound to help minimise swelling and provide additional support during the healing process. Patients will be provided with specific post-operative instructions to aid recovery.

Risks & Complications of Labiaplasty Surgery

As with any surgical procedure, labiaplasty surgery carries potential risks and complications. These may vary depending on individual factors, including overall health, the presence of any scar tissue, the patient’s healing capacity and adherence to post-operative aftercare, as well as the surgical approach used. Some potential risks and complications of labiaplasty surgery include:

  • Infection
  • Excessive Bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Haematoma
  • Seroma
  • Necrosis
  • Poor Wound Healing
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
  • Anaesthesia Complications
  • Changes in Skin Sensation
  • Unsatisfactory Results
  • Need for Revision Surgery

At Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, we place large emphasis on educating our patients regarding the potential risks of surgery to ensure both patient and surgeon are taking all measures to understand and avoid complications.

Labiaplasty Recovery

Recovery from labiaplasty surgery will vary from patient to patient and depends on the extent and complexity of the procedure and the patient’s individual healing capacity.

Patients may experience pain, aches, pressure and discomfort, generally lasting up to two weeks after a labiaplasty procedure. Pain relief medication can help address discomfort after surgery, and pain management will be at the discretion of your surgeon and your anaesthetist. We will be able to prescribe oral pain medication to assist with any pain and discomfort in the immediate post-operative period, pending advice from your surgeon.

During recovery, patients will be advised to:

  • Keep the incisions clean and dry
  • Avoid smoking
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat nutritious food
  • Take time to rest and recover
  • Take salt baths to relieve soreness
  • Avoid wearing tight clothing
  • Avoid any sexual activity

All patients will be provided with specific post-operative aftercare instructions to support healing and recovery, and our team will schedule regular follow-ups monitor recovery and address any concerns. Adherence to appropriate post-surgery care is essential.

Labiaplasty Costs & Payment Options

In order to prepare financially for any surgical procedure, it is essential to understand what costs and associated fees may be included in your labiaplasty quote. At Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, we aim to provide patients with clear and concise price breakdowns so they are fully aware of what is included, can make informed decisions, and properly budget and plan ahead.

Pricing for labiaplasty at Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery will typically include your surgeon’s fee, hospital fees, general anaesthetic costs, post-operative garments and follow-up care with our in-house nursing team.

Labiaplasty surgery is a customised procedure, and costs will vary between patients. Every patient is different and surgery prices are quoted on a case-by-case basis subjective to the anatomy and complexities of each case, and time taken in theatre or chosen facility.

A labiaplasty procedure may be considered cosmetic or medical in nature, which means in some cases, there may be Medicare and private health rebates available. In some instances, where a labiaplasty procedure is considered medical – when it is performed to correct a medical issue rather than for cosmetic reasons, and when the patient meets certain criteria – patients may be eligible for a rebate. Whether your labiaplasty procedure is considered cosmetic or medical will be determined with you at your consultation. For patients who are seeking to combine a labiaplasty procedure with another procedure, such as breast augmentation mammoplasty or breast lift (mastopexy), this is an additional procedure and will affect pricing. The total costs and any available rebates will be discussed with you at your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is labiaplasty surgery?

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at reshaping and/or reducing the size of the labia minora (the inner vaginal lips) and sometimes the labia majora (the outer vaginal lips). The surgery is typically performed for either functional or cosmetic reasons.

How long do the results of labiaplasty last?

Labiaplasty, when performed as a reduction procedur,e is generally considered a one-time, long-lasting procedure. Unless complications arise following surgery, it is unlikely you will require this surgery again.

It is important to know that if you choose to have children after a labiaplasty procedure, this may affect your labiaplasty results. It is often recommended that patients considering a labiaplasty procedure wait until after they’ve completed their families to undergo labiaplasty surgery.

When can i return to work after labiaplasty?

Generally, patients are able to return to work and other light activities a few days following labiaplasty surgery. If your job involves physical activity or lifting, you may need to stay home longer. We generally advise patients to avoid any of the following for at least six weeks or until cleared by your surgeon:

  • Strenuous exercise
  • Physical activities like cycling, running and swimming
  • Sexual activity

Returning to these activities too soon can put pressure on the wound, tear stitches and delay healing.

When can i have sex or exercise after labiaplasty?

After labiaplasty surgery, it is important to allow your body enough time to heal before resuming sexual activity or exercise. Patients are advised to avoid sexual intercourse, vigorous exercise, cycling, and activities that place pressure or friction on the surgical area for at least six weeks. This timeframe may vary depending on your individual healing, the extent of surgery, and your surgeon’s advice.

Gentle walking is usually encouraged within the first week to support circulation, but strenuous workouts, running, or heavy lifting should be avoided until you receive clearance at your follow-up appointments. Returning to sexual activity too soon may increase the risk of discomfort, wound healing complications, or infection.

Always follow the personalised guidance from your surgeon, as recovery can differ between patients. If you are unsure, it is best to wait until you have been examined at your post-operative review and given medical clearance.

Can skin grow back after labiaplasty?

Your skin will not grow back after labiaplasty surgery. That said, your skin can still stretch after labiaplasty, especially during childbirth. We recommend that patients who are considering labiaplasty surgery wait until they have completed their families.
